Post #645653 Member 9:41 pm, Jun 26 2014 Posts: 202 Ok, old thread was just about the hack and mostly about people complaining about passwords and such so I made a new thread with more updated things. Within the first week, we learned a few things. 1) The plan is partially to rebuild the site, not just update the password system (from current owner) 2) Apparently many people used the hack as a time to jump ship. (what I hear) 3) Few people were given access to the archives to do a complete backup (not confirmed on my end) 4) An idea was given to pass off the hosting to someone else, which is why access was given 5) as of probably the 12th or the 17th download servers are gone, and the plan is to fund the viewer servers till they lapse, given about 300$ for that a month, and 1800$ was raised, they got about 5 months to do something. This is all I know, and after the first week, I have hear nothing at all about what is going on. Anyone with newer info would be greatly appreciated.

The place was a godsend for getting older manga series, or ones where the series was spread over multiple scanlators, many of whom may no longer be around. If they don't come back, it's a lot more likely that I won't be putting as much stuff on my Wish List here as the chances of me being able to grab the chapters at a later date will be a lot lower. Kind of like how hi10 does it, a low speed seed spread out across an entire archive, with this one only being torrents.
This would basically ensure that the site is never completely dead, and have a diminished importance on registering if there is a need for it at all. I personally don't care if the site comes back or not, I will miss it immensely, but i learned how to make due when lurk went tits up, i'll learn when this site never comes back, but what i want is to be let into the loop. I want to know the plans, and if I need to track down new places to go. 4) An idea was given to pass off the hosting to someone else, which is why access was given. Partially True.
Access was given to three people in order to have them archive the material MangaTraders contained (A total of 1.6 TB of data). The actual hosting of MangaTraders still lies with Aftershock and no plans to transfer it to a new party were ever proposed. The three people who were given access have different plans of what they intend to do with the database. Sakisan intends to create torrent files and distribute them through that way.
Woxxy wants to create a site that is comparable to MangaTraders and resume distribution that way. Blue donated the $1800 to MangaTraders and in return for allowing Aftershock to keep some or all of that, was given access to the database as well. His copy of the database is seemingly for private use. As of right now a complete copy of all data has been obtained by each of these individuals and Sakisan and Woxxy have been collaborating on renaming and organizing files to prepare them for later release. 5) As of probably the 12th or the 17th download servers are gone, and the plan is to fund the viewer servers till they lapse, given about 300$ for that a month, and 1800$ was raised, they got about 5 months to do something. Partially True, but details are incorrect.
(Also plans changed after the attack) Prior to the hacking, Aftershock was looking for methods to continue funding the server costs of MangaTraders. After a couple days of listening to alternative methods of payment Aftershock went with BitCoin donations. He immediately received an $1800 donation from Blue. This amount would have covered the server costs for June and July ONLY.
MangaTraders ran off of a total of 7 servers each costing $100 a month. Five served as distribution servers for people downloading files from the site, one supported the online viewer, and the final one ran the site itself, accounts, and the forum. This put the cost of running MangaTraders at $700 a month.
With Blue's generous donation the plan was to run MangaTraders until the funds were exhausted and see what would happen. Whether people would continue to donate enough to run the site or whether it would lapse again on the 14th of August. Unfortunately the user accounts were hacked quickly after this and the site went into maintenance to fix the security for user accounts on June 9th.
Later that night, Aftershock confirmed on IRC that he was abandoning the site and gave access to Woxxy & Sakisan for them to continue their efforts in creating an archive. Blue arrived soon after this and had a private conversation with Aftershock about his donation. The details of this conversation were private but according to Blue he allowed Aftershock to keep at least $900 of it to pay overdue server bills so that Aftershock could have a clean break from the site without having to be in debt once it went down and in return Blue would get access to the database as well. So there you have it. This is about as current as you can get on this and I hope it can bring a lot of people up to date on the situation as it stands.

Side Note: I would be remiss not to include the perpetrators behind the attack on MangaTraders. These people purposely and willingly put tens of thousands of people at risk for 'the lulz' and forced an outstanding cornerstone of the Anime/Manga community under. It sickens me that this attack didn't come from an outside force but rather from a group that works within this community.
Shortly after Aftershock gave Woxxy and Sakisan access to the MangaTraders database, it came to light that the ones who had compromised the user accounts were none other than the Administrator and Staff Members of HorribleSubs. Matt (HorribleSubs' Administrator), Snowfag (Distribution Server Manager), and Botox not only hacked their way into MangaTrader's user accounts database but went out of their way to distribute this to the internet endangering the private information of 50,000 users. They subsequently stated that they had access to the PayPal donor list of MangaTraders and released a couple of names and addresses form this list. Taken from the #HorribleSubs IRC channel. That4chanwolf: you do know it was matt, me, and botox that hacked their shit right Wait, really yes Shit does anyone want the database with all the paypal donation info Sure 47mb of text, god damn Lol is has every address and email of people who donated lmao Aoi-chan get that?
No I have not given it to anyone yet If only Yuki was here lmfao INSERT INTO `paypalpaymentinfo` (`firstname`, `lastname`, `buyeremail`, `street`, `city`, `state`, `zipcode`, `memo`, `itemname`, `itemnumber`, `os0`, `on0`, `os1`, `on1`, `quantity`, `paymentdate`, `paymenttype`, `txnid`, `mcgross`, `mcfee`, `paymentstatus`, `pendingreason`, `txntype`, `tax`, `mccurrency`, `reasoncode`, `custom`, `country`, `datecreation`) VALUES. eusid has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds) Addresses too? 1) The plan is partially to rebuild the site, not just update the password system. The site is currently under going maintenance or repair, please check back in later. Early on June 09th 2014 EDT we discovered that someone had gained unauthorized access to our web server. All the contents of our database were downloaded and released to the internet. This data included private user information such as email addresses and obscured passwords for all registered users. Anyone that used the same password for MT as for any other online services should change their passwords as soon as possible. Your online accounts could be compromised if malicious users reverse engineer your MT password from this data dump and log into your other accounts. The site will remain offline until we can implement a more robust system for maintaining password integrity at which time all users will be required to change their passwords.
About Us
We believe the attacker gained access to the site's database through the forums so they will remain offline indefinitely while we investigate possible alternatives. We deeply apologize for this incident and all the inconvenience it has caused and hope to move past it and come back safer and more secure than ever. It has been a trying few weeks for Mangatraders but we've weathered storms in the past and we'll weather this one as well.
Thank you all for your time and support. The Mangatraders.com Staff.
